Conservation & Heritage

Conservation

There are very few communities in the world that can boast an internationally recognised wildlife reserve on their doorstep. Mariners Cove has a 230-acre conservation area which protects the Creery Wetlands, an internationally recognized waterbird habitat that is home to migrating birds from around the world.

Cedar Woods has undertaken significant revegetation and protection of the area over the past seven years, including the restoration of important samphire vegetation which had been degraded by vehicles. A feral proof fence and fox baiting program have helped native birds and animals find a safe home at Mariners Cove. On any day dozens of black swans, pelicans and other wetland birds feed in the shallows on the edge of the samphire marsh. Residents can access the reserve through a controlled gateway.

Once inside you’ll discover walk trails, viewing platforms and information shelters providing a unique insight into this unique and fragile environment.

Another environmental initiative undertaken by Cedar Woods at Mariners Cove is the establishment of an innovative ‘snake’ drain which accepts most of the stormwater runoff from the residential area to protect nearby waterways from potential pollutants. The drain combines best practice environmental and engineering techniques with contemporary public art.

Heritage

Aboriginal heritage has also been incorporated into the Mariners Cove development after ethnographic surveys revealed that a watering hole and two camping sites existed in the area. Following close consultation with the local Aboriginal community the sites were incorporated within local parks, along with Aboriginal art works designed and installed by local Aboriginal artisans.
